Cascade entered the paddling world after years of makinghelmets for hockey and lacrosse. Of all of the helmets submitted for the test, the Cascade provided the most complete coverage. Like the Pro-Tec, the Cascade is a polyethylene helmet. Impacts are softened by a multiple-impact polypropylene liner. Outfitting consists of one strap that wraps around the base of your skull and then, as one would expect, fastens underneath your chin. While the Cascade helmet provides the most bomber coverage, we found that it was the most Spartan in terms of cushioning and outfitting. And while that may initially detract from its appeal, with six sizes available—one shell size outfitted with different liners—a custom fit is never far away. We also know of several advanced paddlers, one of them an EMT/mountain rescue jock, who swear by the Cascade helmet.
