The many sublime moments that a paddler is privy to could fill the Grand Canyon. Few would argue that greasing across flatwater in a race-worthy boat isn’t one of them. Take a warm day, a piece of flatwater, a focused effort, and watch the shoreline go by like you jacked someone’s outboard.
My own paddling career started with roaming the Canadian bush for weeks or months at a time in search of bigger and dumber fish. Racing kayaks were a logical next step when my trips started to get longer in distance and shorter in time. These days, my paddling is done in sea kayaks or whitewater playboats. Given the tippy nature of most performance boats, I wondered if I would be swimming more than paddling when this review was slated. Fortunately, all of these boats are well within reach of anyone who wants to step up to something faster, whether it is for competing, fitness training, or just the sheer joy of going fast.

Equipment is a tool to be used to get the job done; what matters most is just being on the water. Skill and finesse will always trump a fancy piece of eye candy gear.
