Folding Kayak Phenomenon

This U.S.-made solid double greatly resembles the Klepper Aerius II from Germany. In fact, full frames and hulls are interchangeable between the boats, although there is no affiliation between the companies. The Mark II is much beefier, with solid gunwales and other heavy-duty components plus more rugged fittings. All of this, however, comes at a price-greater weight.
Assembly: The Mark II assembles quite quickly. It does not have the snap fittings of the Klepper but instead utilizes cotter pins, which slows down assembly a bit. But there are no difficult moments in the assembly process. A team of two, with a modicum of practice, can assemble the Mark II in less than 10 minutes.
Handling: This double handles beautifully on the water in all kinds of conditions. It tracks well without a rudder, although using one is advisable to overcome different paddling tendencies of the two paddlers. It is a stiff boat, so it tends to be faster than comparably sized doubles. Stability is on a level with the legendary Klepper.
Details: Everything on the Mark II is nicely "overbuilt"-all components are solid and rugged. Skins use Hypalon on the hull with cotton canvas decks. Fittings are all stainless steel, which is somewhat tougher than aluminum. But as mentioned earlier, all of this adds weight. The Mark II comes equipped for sailing and has a superior balanced rudder that is excellent when using a sail.
Portability: The carrying bags are well built but awkward to carry. And the boat being heavy means you really don't want to go far carrying it in its several bags.
