The Java is part of Feathercraft's Airline series of hybrids that combine elements of folding kayaks, inflatables, and sit-on-tops. These models draw on the most desirable features of each type of kayak, and the Java is the most versatile model of the bunch.

Assembly: Putting together the Java is quick thanks to its being partly an inflatable that you blow up with the handy pump that is provided. The frame part is just enough to make the Java a form of folding kayak or skin boat, without taking much time to connect. Expect assembly times in the 15-minute range.

Handling: The Java tracks well under most conditions. If crosswinds become a problem, deploying the built-in skeg gets you back on track immediately. Having a frame stiffens the Java so that it can handle rough conditions and paddle faster than most inflatables. Stability is that of a good sit-on-top or inflatable.

Details: The frame consists of long aluminum tubes that Feathercraft also uses for its regular folding kayaks. These are encased in a tough synthetic skin. Workmanship is excellent. You can secure a decent amount of gear under mesh panels that form semi-decked storage compartments. The Java, while primarily intended to be a single, can also be quickly converted into a double.

Portability: The Java comes in a large duffel, not a backpack, that is awkward to carry very far. Assembled, it is not heavy and can be carried easily.
