Folding Kayak Phenomenon
|
This is a relatively new sea kayak from the Norwegian maker of a well-respected line of expedition folding canoes. The longest single folding kayak on the market, it is fast and gives impressive performance.
Assembly: The technique is similar to assembling a folding canoe. Indeed, the Ally fittings and parts have their origin in such canoes. Force and banging is required at certain steps. The boat lacks sponsons making for a tighter fit. It takes somewhat longer to assemble than the average single foldable.
Handling: Superb in every department. It is fast. This boat can be leaned easily on its side for bracing and carving turns, and yet its initial stability is not tender. The Ally tracks very well, with little if any weathercocking. It is the quintessential open-water boat.
Details: Frames are all aluminum and the hull is a strong PVC-coated material. Workmanship is fine. Durability equals that of its folding canoe brethren, which have withstood the abuses of northern travels for decades. You do have lots of access to storage because of the zippered decks.
Portability: The company is planning to switch from an awkward bag that resembles a huge dry bag. The replacement will be a bag with a padded hip belt and shoulder harness. This should improve portability.
