Bahiya, P&H
The Bahiya is a dagger, and the most flared of these kayaks by far—nearly creating a second hard chine. Given its narrow beam and V hull, we had to be on top of every stroke and every
movement. Even the slightest shift
in weight would initiate a turn in a moving, unloaded boat. The fine, raked bow stretches back into an arch over the foredeck and levels out into a flat rear deck behind the cockpit. There are two moderately sized compartments and a day compartment immediately behind the cockpit, all sealed by VCP hatches tethered to the hull to keep them from sinking.
The retractable skeg is located midway aft between the cockpit and stern in the rear compartment; the control is a convenient size, placed out of the way to the right of the cockpit. All bulkheads are fiberglass; the bulkhead behind the cockpit is rounded to increase room behind the seat and reinforce the rear deck. Deck rigging is sparse, but what is there is held by flush fittings that are covered inside the kayak. There is a groove for a paddle shaft near the cockpit, well placed for a single-grip paddle-float self-rescue. The cockpit coaming is low and recessed; inside, there is a large, adjustable rear-sloping seat, an adjustable back band and hip pads, and small, comfortable thigh braces. Adjusting the seat requires use of an included Allen wrench.
