Phoenix, Eddyline Kayaks
The Phoenix is a comfortable, stable, and responsive kayak with a pronounced tendency to weathercock. It is a Swedeform with a classic keyhole cockpit placed rear of center that creates deep, integrated thigh braces under the arched foredeck. These pair well with a dramatically rear-sloped seat and low, flexible back, all firmly attached. The foot pegs unlock with levers reaching unobtrusively back to the paddler, allowing easy adjustment while seated. There are large rubber hatches fore and aft, with lots of storage in the forward compartment and a moderate amount in the rear. There is adequate deck rigging, with smooth fittings, though bolts are exposed under the deck. Rubber bumpers protect the bow and stern.
The Phoenix has a retractable skeg housed near the stern, and the housing leaked water into the compartment at the alarming rate of nearly two quarts an hour in moderate conditions. This problem may be unique to the test boat, but it is a common issue among skeg housings in general and worth keeping in mind.
