The Shadow is a kayaker’s kayak, with a sleek Greenland-style look. Slicing upswept ends and a single hard chine with a wide sheer line make it initially tippy but provide great secondary stability. The low-profile deck has three storage areas with tough rubber Valley Canoe Products hatch covers, including a day hatch on the left, all well and wisely tethered to the hull. There is not a lot of storage within, but enough for careful packers for multi-day trips. There is minimal rigging and no self-rescue rig, but a good perimeter line and recessed fittings. A retractable skeg is housed in the rear compartment; the small control is out of the way to the left of the cockpit. There is a tough, though basic, composite seat that could use more padding, and small thigh braces that provide good purchase. A deep gutter surrounds the cockpit coaming, for a tight spray-skirt fit and dry ride, and the rear bulkhead is sloped backward to facilitate draining after a capsize.
