500-27, Specmat Technologies
500-27
If money is no object, Specmat Technologies manufactures the Rolls-Royce of PLBs, the 500-27. Technically, Specmat's 500-27 is considered an ELTS (Emergency Locating Transmitter Survival unit), which is basically a handheld version of the bigger ELTs that are required on all planes. The 500-27 transmits on the same frequencies that other PLBs use (406 MHz and 121.5 MHz), but it also transmits on the military-specific 243 MHz frequency. This signal allows the 500-27 to outshine its competitors by offering two-way speech compatibility. When rescuers are homing in on your location you'll be able to hail them on your PLB and tell them exactly what's up. The 500-27 has an internal GPS chip, is waterproof to 30 feet, will run for 48 hours, and can sustain forces up to 12 G's (just in case you plan on dropping any major waterfalls). Specmat also makes less expensive models that offer fewer features.
