The 406 (by ACR Electronics) is a basic no-frills PLB. Its size and weight-comparable to a TV remote control-don't make it the smallest PLB on the market, but it's compact enough to fit in a large PFD pocket or in the top of a daypack. A flexible antenna wraps around the bright yellow unit for storage and can easily be extended for use. A red LED light lets you know that the PLB is on and transmitting, and an audio tone lets you know that the homing signal is activated. A self-test mode allows you to check the batteries before you head out. As an added bonus for paddlers, the 406PLB floats, although it won't transmit while underwater. The basic 406PLB model comes without a GPS interface, but for a couple of hundred extra you can get the GyPSI 406 GPS-compatible model and a GPS interface connector.
