The Atlantic Cart, capable of carrying 175 pounds, is a tubular anodized aluminum frame carrier built around an inverted-V-shaped axle for strength and lateral stability. The main crossbar locks into a T-shaped plastic sleeve just inboard of the wheels, with the second crossbar swiveling on a second T-sleeve inboard of that. The crossbar works as a spring, snapping in place with indents on the sleeve. A single kickstand pivots on an indented, spring-loaded post at the upper end of the main crossbar. A web strap holds the crossbars at the proper width when open; a cord holds the kickstand in place.
Crossbar height is about 13 inches, the bars are 18 inches wide, and the axle span is 27 inches. Rubber pads cushion the crossbars. Ground clearance at the apex of the axle is about 9 inches. Pins with locking rings secure the wheels of the axle. Pop the pins and the frame folds to 28 by 13 by 3 inches.
The Atlantic comes with a range of spaces, for optional wheel sizes. Space at a premium but you still want the flotation of the Eckla tires? Look at the compact Sea Kayak Cart, $119.95. Its U-shaped axle doubles as a crossbar, with the secondary crossbar pivoting from the axle. Crossbar height is 11 inches, crossbar width is 13 inches, and overall width is 23 inches. With the wheels off, the frame folds to 23 by 10.5 inches.
