Brandon Nelson (stern) and David Kelly cross the finish line in Dawson City.
Course records were crushed at the 2006 Yukon River Quest canoe and kayak race from Whitehorse to Dawson City, held June 28-July 2.
The overall winners, Brandon Nelson and David Kelly, smoked the 460-mile course in 40 hours, 37 minutes, and 5 seconds in a tandem kayak, lopping two and a half hours off the previous best time. Brandon's wife, Heather, won the solo female kayak category, and came in sixth overall with a time of 46:32:27, 10 hours better than the previous best women’s time. Carter Johnson was the only solo male kayaker to beat Heather, coming in third overall with a time of 44:56:34.
Team Kisseynew, an 8-man voyageur team from Saskatchewan, obliterated the previous best voyageur canoe time by 12 hours, crossing the finish line at 42:56:13 and coming in second place overall. Steve Landick and Gregg Nelson teamed up to win the tandem canoe division and finished fourth overall with a time of 46:01:27.
