"Where Does the Trash Come From?" Essay Competition

1st Place
I think that the trash comes from careless people who think the world is their trash can.
"Wow look at all these fish on the shore!"
"They look dead."
"I wonder why?"

That was a conversation by some careless people and I can answer their question. The fish were dead most likely because they ate a piece of trash some "careless" person through in the water: the fish choked on it.
Because of careless people like them, we have to clean up the river year after year, so the fish and other animals in the river can live happy and healthy and also so people can enjoy the river.
Jordan Voisine, King Middle School, Portland, ME, Presumpscot Rive

2nd Place
Humans leave garbage near and in rivers. There should be a law, that people carry trash bags when hiking, canoeing, and camping. There should be trash cans near rivers. When people get done eating or drinking they can throw away their trash, and not throw stuff in or near rivers. If there was a fine for littering, people would stop. Littering is unhealthy for animals. Animals that live in or near rivers may become extinct, due to pollution and littering. Pollution leaves nasty conditions for canoeing and kayaking. You wouldn't want notice garbage on your paddle and canoe - YUK! Cailin Mary Kelly, 6th Grade, Collierville, TN, Wolf River

3rd Place
Nurture Nature

The EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, states that forty percent of all America's waters fail to meet federal sanitation standards. Year after year, cleanups are being held by organizations and by ordinary citizens. But why do we have to clean it every year? The answer, in my opinion, is that modern Americans are slobs. They are disrespectful to nature and are heartless. Most Americans think that all nature, including rivers, will always be useful no matter how badly they treat it and pollute it. So to cut down on the pollution we just simply have to be nicer to Mother Nature.
Courtney Kramer, 7th Grade, Johnsburg, IL, Fox River
