Kayak Chorus Combines Chanting, Paddling

One hour before high tide in Kingsport, Nova Scotia, on Sunday, 20 singing kayakers will be at the heart of the premiere of Sandy Moore's Kayak Chorus.

Moore is a Nova Scotia composer who has had a summer home in Kingsport for 20 years and he’s a man who dreams big. His ultimate plan is a three-act opera with each movement timed to the tide.

The Kayak Chorus, Sunday June 4, 2006, at 7 p.m., is a "wet run" as a 40-minute performance event involving kayakers coming from P.E.I. and throughout Nova Scotia, new music soprano Janice Jackson, flamenco singer and baritone Sean Harris, dancer Gwen Noah, percussionist Marsha Coffey and flutist Jennifer Publicover.

There will be two choirs, the Kayak Chorus, led by kayak captain Jeff McMahon, and an onshore choir directed by David Buley. The piece ends, as the kayakers come ashore, in a surprise finale which Moore won’t reveal. "I’m amazed I haven’t told any people."
