Barton is a four-time Olympic medalist. He won double gold in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, winning the K-1 1000 meters and teaming up with Norm Bellingham (Atlanta, Ga.) to win the K-2 1000 meters. Barton also won bronze in 1984 and 1992.

Barton's achievements did not stop with the Olympic Games, as he won four World Championships titles and more than 50 U.S. National Championship titles. He still paddles in many major marathon and outrigger competitions, often winning and always finishing near the top.

"Greg is one of the greatest paddlers of our lifetime," said David Yarborough, Executive Director of USA Canoe/Kayak. "No athlete in any sport could be more deserving of this recognition."

Barton now spends much of his time working to better the sport by improving the equipment elite paddlers use. He is the president of Epic Paddles, Inc., which specializes in high performance paddles for touring and competition.
