Alaska Sea Kayaking Symposium
Seward is proud to kick off its new Sea Kayak Symposium during the Seward Ocean Festival. It will be combining with the Alaska Sea Kayak Symposium to make this the largest paddle sport event in Alaska.
The Alaska event will have instructors, guides, outfitters, retailers from around Alaska, a variety of classes never offered before in a symposium, a 5 day lecture series, and trade show. It is open to the public for a fun and educational gathering on Resurrection Bay.
Our classes provide a comprehensive introductory, intermediate, and advanced learning experiences to sea kayaking using a hands-on, experience based approach with plenty of on-the-water practice and instruction. We have weekend packages for beginners, advanced beginners intermediate, advanced, and families. Our symposium includes kayak sessions with over 20 hours of instruction; ocean, pool time, trade show and lecture series. Plus our Keynote Presentation on Fox Island!
The Seward Sea Kayaking Symposium is working with the Alaska Sea Kayak Symposium which is a non-profit organization funded through sponsorship and student fees. Principal sponsors include: National Park Service, Alaska SeaLife Center, Miller’s Landing, Hotel Edgewater, Alaska Kayak School, Major Marine, the Alaska Railroad, and more.

Symposium participants can select the following learning programs:
Friday Night: dinner hosted by Major Marine Cruises & Tours, All you can eat Prime Rib! See all the places to kayak in Resurrection Bay and a special kayaking presentation for all the participants aboard the M/V Star of the North! You will cruise the heart of Kenai Fjords National Park. Alaska Maritime Wildlife Refuge, the summer nesting area for thousands of horned and tufted puffins. View Steller sea lions and catch orca, or “killer whales,” and humpback whales as they play while you learn more about kayaking.
Saturday Night: dinner hosted by Kenai Fjords Tours at Fox Island – Our Keynote Speaker will be David Wm. Miller, Author of Exploring Alaska's Kenai Fjords. Join us on a short bay trip to Fox Island, former home to Rockwell Kent during 1918-1919. He was a painter, writer, political activist and man of many talents. Fox Island is a magical mix of temperate rain forest, sculpted cliffs, protected coves, and long pebbled beaches. The surrounding waters teem with marine life including sea lions, sea otters, and whales. Dinner will include grilled wild Alaska salmon, fresh tossed salad, delicious corn on the cob, rice and rolls.
Sunday Night: dinner hosted by Miller's Landing End located out at Lowell Point for a buffet dinner and entertainment. A great way to end the Kayak Fest weekend celebration w/ LiveKayak Races- balances safety and enthusiasm Emersion issues!
Lecture Series:
A full 5 days of professional presentations and slide shows. Symposium lecturers include the Alaska SeaLife Center, National Park Service, NOAA, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and more. They will be focusing on a variety of presentations focusing on Safety, Technique, and Natural History.

Free Public Activities
Everyone is welcome at the Seward Sea Kayaking Symposium. The following weekend events are open to all with:
- On Water Boat Demonstrations (Open to the general public on Saturday. Health and liability waivers are required to try out different boats.)
- Visit Outfitter and Retailer Booths.
- Trade Show Entrance is Free.
