Class III in southern Chile

Warming up in some cold Patagonia snowmelt

Later, over beers on the Kayak Chile main veranda (the tables on the sidewalk in front of the shop), we come to learn that Ben is somewhat of an expert on Chilean paddling—and equipment-logistics. He’s helped run the shop for four years, and recently became the primary owner while his business partner, Nathan Sullivan, provides tactical support from the States. From cajoling port officers into releasing crates of boats to Patagonia paddling road trips, Ben seems to have seen it all.

As a result, the shop provides a myriad of custom trips, from big water playboating to gnar creeking or a mixed bag, and can help ship a boat to any bus station in the country.

Warm up rapid on the lower Liucura

If you’re on the prowl for Chilean boating info, the kayakchile.net Web site is a good start, as well as the “wiki” (user-generated) river index on Futalefu-based Expediciones Chile’s exchile.com, and riversofchile.com, a useful guide to a handful of Chilean rivers set up by two American paddlers living in Pucon.
