August 30th is the start of the Superior Waters Project, a kayak circumnavigation of Lake Superior.
Dave Freeman and Amy Voytilla
Canoe and Kayak Web Exclusive
INTRODUCTION
Two team members from the Wilderness Classroom Organization, Dave Freeman and Amy Voytilla will launch their
Solstice GT kayaks in Grand Marais, Minnesota and begin a clockwise
circumnavigation of Lake Superior. The team is planning to finish the 1,200
mile journey in approximately 60 days, but because of strong winds and
uncertain weather patterns that are common on Lake Superior in the fall they
are prepared to take longer if necessary.
During the journey, Dave and Amy will paddle along the borders of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan and Ontario.
As they paddle on this body of waterthat actually contains 10 % of the earth's freshwater, the team will highlight water usage and conservation issues. There will be regular updates of the Wilderness Classroom Organization's website, www.wildernessclassroom.com.
Dave and Amy will also be sending weekly dispatches to Canoe and Kayak
Magazine that we will publish on our website each week through out September
and October.

The Superior Waters Project is the ninth online learning adventure that Dave Freeman has produced through The Wilderness Classroom., a Chicago based non-profit organization that strives to engage, excite, and motivate students and teachers using an interactive, technology-based learning model that draws upon people's innate curiosity and desire for exploration.
The Wilderness Classroom focuses on students, but paddlers of all ages will enjoy following along through daily podcasts, photos, videos, and much more.
Essentially, this is a program set up to "electronically" bring young people on virtual expeditions all over the world. They bring their educational content-photos, journals, videos, polls, audio clips, chat sessions, quizzes, and more-to over 30,000 students and 900 teachers who join the live expeditions from their classrooms via their website.
After returning from far flung parts of the world Dave and other expedition members conduct dozens of school assemblies and meet with participating students face to face.

| Hello and thank you for posting this wonderful trip. I'm a photojournalist in the Navy and have a plan to do the same type of trip with a few friends when I retire in 2011. We would love any advice that you could provide and if there is a way I could contact the group that went on this trip for their advice. Thanks Brien Aho |
